Immerse yourself in the beautiful Arctic landscapes of Northern Norway on an all-inclusive 7-day dog sledding and camping adventure in Kvaløya from Tromsø!
Kvaløya is the fifth-largest island in mainland Norway, located near the city of Tromsø. The island is known for its stunning landscapes, with deep fjords, rugged mountains and scenic coastlines. On this excursion, you’ll immerse yourself fully in the natural wilderness of the Tromsø Municipality!
The 7-day expedition begins with pick-up from Tromsø (please specify your location upon booking). You’ll board a comfortable minibus and enjoy the scenic drive to the kennels in Tisnes, a small, picturesque area located on the eastern coast of the island of Kvaløya. Upon arrival at the camp, you’ll meet the adorable Alaskan Huskies and enjoy hot drinks and waffles around a campfire. The experienced guide will go through a safety and itinerary briefing, and show you how to use the equipment for dog sledding.
In the evening, a delicious dinner will be served in the cosy Lavvu, while you relax and socialise with the group. You’ll spend the first night sleeping at the kennel on reindeer skins in traditional Sami tents. The following morning, you’ll have an early breakfast in the Lavvu before loading the dogs, sleds and equipment into trailers and boarding the bus for a 2-hour drive to Signaldalen, the starting point for the dog sledding adventure.
Signaldalen is a valley situated in the northern part of Norway, near the border with Sweden. The valley is known for its stunning natural scenery, featuring dense forests, cascading rivers, and towering peaks. You’ll set up the dogs with the sled and get equipped with warm winter clothing. Each sled will be operated in pairs, with one driver and one passenger, and a team of 5-6 dogs. You’ll have opportunities to switch positions throughout the ride.
Then, you’ll set off on the first dog sledding adventure! You’ll cover roughly 30 km (19 mi) through mountain forests to the Three-Nation Border between Norway, Sweden and Finland. Here, you’ll set up camp in the wilderness with the equipment provided by the guide (including a tent, air mattress, roll mat, and sleeping bag).
For days 2-6, the exact itinerary and route will vary slightly each day depending on the weather conditions and Arctic terrain. Each day, you'll start by packing up the camp and preparing the dogs and the sled. You'll be sledding each day for approximately 3-7 hours, with plenty of breaks for you and the dogs to rest. The entire expedition will take you approximately 250 km (155 mi) through mountain forests, across frozen lakes and over high plateaus. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided each day.
On the fourth day, you’ll arrive at a unique campsite in Rostojavri, a large lake located in a remote and pristine area. Here, you’ll be treated to an overnight stay in a warm cabin with a sauna. On the final night of the trail, a delicious BBQ meal will be prepared over an open fire. On day 7, you’ll ride through Øvre Dividal National Park, a wilderness park known for its diverse landscapes and rich wildlife. The final stop on the excursion will be at Dividalen, a beautiful valley located in Målselv Municipality. At Dividalen, transportation will be waiting for you to take you back to Tromso.
