Tromsø is a vibrant city located in the northern part of Norway, known for its stunning natural beauty. Situated 350 kilometres (217 miles) north of the Arctic Circle, it is also one of the northernmost cities in the world and a premier destination for witnessing the Northern Lights!

To begin the adventure, you'll meet the experienced guide at the starting point in Tromsø. Then, you'll enjoy a 25-minute scenic drive to Kvaløya, a beautiful island situated to the west of the city. Upon arrival at the camp, you'll visit the dog yard, home to over 200 Alaskan Husky dogs and puppies! You'll spend some time playing and interacting with the friendly huskies, as you learn more about the breed and how they're cared for.

After the tour of the kennels, you'll settle around a campfire in a cosy Gamme-hut. A delicious meal of Bacalao (a traditional Norwegian fish dish with Portuguese roots made from locally sourced cod), chocolate cake dessert, tea, and coffee will be served while you wait for the Northern Lights to appear. The dark and often cloudless skies near Tromsø are known throughout the world to be one of the best areas to view this awe-inspiring natural phenomenon.

Enjoy the mesmerising dance of the Aurora Borealis in the Arctic night sky as the guide shares myths and legends about the lights. In the night, you'll sleep in traditional Lavvu tents shared with other guests, furnished with soft reindeer skins and high-quality camping gear. The tent's overhead windows allow you to gaze out at the starry sky directly from your bed!

In the morning, you'll enjoy a hearty breakfast to start your day. Then, it will be time to take the dogs out on the sleds! You have the choice to book a sled as a passenger, where an experienced guide will do all the pushing and you can simply glide along in the sled. If you're in the mood for a bit of a workout, you can book the self-drive option, where you will take turns driving the sled in pairs, pushing along with the Alaskan Huskies.

After a quick safety briefing and driving instructions, you'll set up the sled and begin the dog sledding adventure! Dog sledding is an iconic part of the Norwegian experience, allowing you to explore the remote Arctic landscapes and pass by incredible mountain views. After the dog sledding excursion, you'll return to the camp and end the experience with a hot lunch of Bidos, a reindeer stew typical to the Sami people of Finnmark. After lunch, it will be time to say goodbye to the dogs before returning to the starting point in Tromsø.

The Glamping experience was once in a lifetime opportunity that was definitely a highlight of my trip to Norway. The cabins were very comfortable and warm and the food was plentiful for all the meals. The stars of the show were not only the Northern Lights (which was visible, but not for long) but the beautiful dogs. They are well cared for and are their happiest pulling the sleigh’s. The entire experience was worth every cent and the long, long trip (from Australia)
