Travel back through time during this Gold Rush tour from Whitehorse, Yukon to Skagway, Alaska!
The great Klondike Gold Rush of 1896 was a key moment in Yukon history that has influenced the region to this day. Transportation was revolutionised, including the construction of the White Pass and Yukon railway, towns were established out of thin air, and mining would become estamped in the Yukon’s economic landscape forever more. The Klondike Gold Rush was also known as ‘the last great adventure’, and though it might be over, the great adventure of traversing the Yukon as the gold stampeders once did can be experienced during this immersive tour from Whitehorse to Skagway!
On route to Skagway, the tour will first stop in the charming town of Carcross where you will be able to admire its beautiful surroundings, including the brilliant colours of Emerald Lake and the ‘world’s smallest desert’. From there, the tour will continue onwards, crossing the US border to Skagway, Alaska, where many gold prospectors first set out on their journey to the Klondike!
In Skagway, you will jump on a 1947 Baldwin steam locomotive and experience the Yukon like the Gold Rush prospectors would have! The 5 hour train ride will pass through the Coastal Mountain range to the former Gold Rush boom town of Lake Bennet, where you will have 45 minutes to hop out and explore. Back aboard the train you will enjoy snacks and refreshments while your guide shares the history of the Klondike Gold Rush and the construction of the railway with you. As you pass through tunnels and over trestles, you will have an incredible view of the stunning Yukon landscape, just as the Gold Rush prospectors did all those years ago!
