What is Manawa?

Manawa is the first booking website specialising in the promotion and sale of outdoor and adventure activities to customers worldwide. The website was launched in May 2016 and is managed by an international team, passionate about activities and based in France between Paris and Marseille. Today you'll find over 8,000 activities offered by over 3,000 professional outdoor partners on the website.

Where does the name Manawa come from?

Finding the name Manawa wasn't easy. We were looking for a name that sounded outdoorsy and adventurous, that was easy to pronounce in English, German, French and Spanish and that would allow us to build our brand around it. When the name came up again and again, we started to get serious about it. We researched the definition of Manawa and came up with a number of things, including the name of a wave in Mauritius, a town in the United States, the Maori word for breath, a kitesurf board from the F-One brand... This convinced us that it was a perfect name for us.

So, we decided to add a new definition to Manawa: the best website for booking outdoor and adventure activities.

What is Manawa's objective?

Manawa has two main objectives, one for customers and the other for business professionals.

For our customers, we want to enable as many people as possible from all over the world to discover the best outdoor and adventure activities and to be able to book them quickly and easily anywhere in the world.

For activity professionals, we want to help them develop their brand and activities by providing additional bookings, visibility, advice, and training.

What is Manawa's business model?

The partnership is completely free in terms of set-up and visibility, and you only pay a commission on the customers you can bring through us to discover your outdoor and adventure activities.

  • There are no hidden costs: setting up is completely free and everything is 100% transparent.
  • No commitment: we only work with motivated partners. All it takes is a simple e-mail from our partners, and also from Manawa, to stop working together.
  • Pay-for-performance: you pay a commission (from 22% depending on the activity) on your public sale price for the referral service only if you welcome additional customers.
  • Bank charges included: all charges are included in the commission, international payments, refunds, currency conversions, etc.
  • Protection against last-minute cancellations: you choose a cancellation policy for each of your activities and if customers don't turn up you are still paid.
  • Payment and automatic invoicing: payments are automatic every 15th of the month following the date of activity. If you welcome 100 customers in April, you will receive a commission invoice by email and a bank transfer with the amount minus the commission.

Who are Manawa's customers?

Manawa's customers come from all over the world, with over 60 different nationalities discovering our partners' outdoor and adventure activities in 2023. The main nationalities are French, German, English, American, Dutch and Spanish.

The majority are sporty consumers, but often beginners in the activity they book. The typical Manawa customer goes running once a week and books a canyoning trip for the first time on holiday.

On average, we have 2.7 customers per booking, very often couples or families.

The average booking time is 10 days in advance, 15% of the time less than 4 days in advance, 35% 5 to 10 days in advance, 30% 10 to 30 days in advance and 20% more than a month in advance.

Customers are satisfied with Manawa's services; we have a rating of 4.7/5 out of over 22,000 customer reviews. Their comments almost always mention our simplicity and speed.

How does Manawa find customers?

Today we have five main acquisition channels, but we're constantly looking for new ones to help our partners discover and sell their outdoor and adventure activities.

  • Paid internet advertising in 4 languages: buying paid keywords via Google Ads, Bing Ads, Facebook Ads, Youtube Ads...
  • Affiliation: we pay external contributors such as travel bloggers, the media, brands, etc. For example, in Corsica with our partner blogger [Paradisu] (trilingual).
  • SEO (natural search engine optimisation): we have a content strategy dedicated to promoting outdoor and adventure activities and destinations through natural search engine optimisation.
  • The Manawa brand: we are gradually becoming the benchmark for outdoor and adventure activities, and we have more and more customers who keep the brand top of mind.
  • Multi-booking: When a customer books an activity such as canyoning, we also offer them the chance to discover other activities nearby like parachuting or rafting.

How does the partnership work?

An example of the booking process is outlined below:

  1. The customer discovers your activities on Manawa via one of our acquisition channels.
  2. Once the customer is on the activity page on Manawa they make a booking request for 4 people for an activity on 22 September. They enter their surname, first name, telephone number, email address (and, if required, their height, weight, shoe size, level, etc.) and their bank details.
  3. Customers book their activity online using Manawa's secure payment system.
    1. If your booking tool is connected via API to Manawa - we are currently connected to 10 booking tools and we are adding 2 or 3 new software packages a year. For partners connected to one of these softwares, managing bookings is even quicker and easier. Customers have direct access to your availabilities when they book on Manawa, confirmation is automatic, and customer information (surname, first name, email, telephone, etc.) goes directly into your booking tool. From here, customers skip to point 7 to continue the process.
    2. If you don't have any software or if your software is not yet connected, the process continues with point 4 below.
  4. As the provider you will receive an email, an SMS, and a notification to the partner backoffice space asking if you are available on the date requested to welcome your 4 customers.
  5. If it's right for you, you validate and automatically receive all the customer information and the customer receives yours. If the booking request is not possible, you can suggest other dates to match an existing group or create a new outing.
  6. When you accept the booking, the customer's bank card is debited. The funds are transferred to an escrow account in your name, held at Manawa.
  7. On the day of the event, you welcome customers.
  8. 48 hours later, the customer receives an email to leave a review of the activity, of you, and of Manawa.
  9. On the 15th of the month following the date of the activity, you will receive a commission invoice by e-mail with details of the service provided. At the same time, payment is released and issued by automatic bank transfer. Manawa retains a business introducer commission on the day the partner is paid.
