Rebbenesøya is a pristine, remote island in Troms og Finnmark county in northern Norway, situated approximately 80 kilometres (50 miles) northwest of Tromsø City. On this 3-day camping excursion from Tromsø, you'll experience a diverse range of winter activities and explore the natural beauty of Rebbenesøya Island!
The Arctic camping trip in Rebbenesøya begins at the agreed meeting point in Tromsø (please specify when booking). You'll be greeted by an experienced guide and begin the scenic journey to Rebbenesøya, passing winding fjords, towering mountains, and glistening lakes. The drive takes approximately 90 minutes to Mikkelvika ferry landing, followed by a 10-minute ferry crossing to Bromnes on the island of Rebbenesøya. Upon arrival, you'll have a 15-30 minute snowshoe walk to the remote campsite.
The camp in Rebbenesøya is situated in a peaceful spot without road access, electricity or running water. Water is gathered from a local stream and food is cooked using wood-fire ovens. You'll get settled in your cosy yurt, which is equipped with beds, duvets, sheets, blankets, and pillows, a kitchen, and a lounge area with comfy chairs. Then, you'll enjoy a light meal before preparing for your evening sea kayaking excursion in Rebbenesøya! The guide will provide the equipment (kayak, paddle, dry suit, and life jacket) and a safety briefing. No previous kayaking experience is needed.
On the starry polar night, you'll set off paddling along the icy waters, weaving between beautiful islets. If you're lucky, the mesmerising Northern Lights will also appear in the sky above you! This is a magical way to experience the calm Arctic night. After your evening sea kayaking near Tromsø, you'll return to the camp for a hearty meal. You'll spend the night sleeping in the comfortable yurt. The following morning, you'll enjoy breakfast at the camp and get ready for another sea kayaking trip near Tromsø.
This time, you'll paddle in the Arctic daylight, allowing you to take in the magnificent coastal scenery. You may also spot some local wildlife, such as eagles, otters and seals! On this half-day kayaking trip around different islands, you'll stop for breaks to enjoy hot drinks and snacks. Then, you'll return to the camp for a warm lunch either inside the yurt or outdoors around a campfire. The second half of the day is very customisable and also depends on the snow conditions. You may go snowshoe hiking in the remote wilderness, or cross-country skiing in the mountains. Both activities are possible directly from the camp or you can travel to tracks on the island.
After your snowshoeing or cross-country skiing excursion in Rebbenesøya, you'll return to the camp for dinner. If you still have energy left, you can embark on another nighttime excursion! This could be an additional sea kayaking trip, or even snowshoeing or skiing if the snow level allows. You may spot the Northern Lights dancing again as you experience a fun winter activity. There is also the option of simply relaxing at the camp for the evening. You could play cards, read a book or gather around the sparkling wood-fire oven while taking in the peaceful atmosphere.
The final day starts with breakfast at the camp, before your last activity. On this day, you'll embark on a sightseeing tour of Rebbenesøya! You'll drive southwest to Engvika, admiring the rugged landscapes of the island along the way. Engvika is a small area on Rebbenesøya known for its tranquil coastal beauty and ties to traditional Norwegian fishing culture. You'll visit one of the world's most beautiful shops in Engvika. If weather conditions allow, you'll hike on the nearby hills and admire the spectacular views of the open sea. You'll also have a view of the island of Sørfugløya, known for its puffin colony.
The sightseeing tour in Rebbenesøya continues to Måsvik, a small, picturesque village on the southern side of the island. Here, you'll have amazing views of the island's white sandy beaches, clear blue waters, and smaller islands. The guide will also take you to some of the marked trails on Rebbenesøya, which offer stunning views. You'll eat lunch during the sightseeing trip and return to the camp to pack up.
