Athens is the capital city of Greece, the largest city in the country which holds a lot of historical significance. The Athens Riviera is a coastal stretch along Athens, extending from the southern edge of the city centre to the southernmost point of the Attica peninsula. It is known for its stunning coastline, sandy beaches, and crystal-clear waters.
The SSI Try Scuba Diving session is the best way to experience scuba diving for the first time. This entry-level programme is your introduction to the underwater world. To start, you’ll meet the certified instructor at the dive centre in Athens. They will go through a safety and itinerary briefing for the session. Then, you’ll receive your scuba diving equipment (wetsuit, boots, fins, mask, BCD, regulators, tank, and weight belts) and go through its use.
After learning the basic theory of scuba diving, you’ll travel to the dive site in Vouliagmeni at the Athens Riviera. This coastal suburb of Athens is popular for its beautiful beaches and clear waters. There are several dive sites in Vouliagmeni offering diving excursions for all levels, including underwater caves, reefs, and ancient shipwrecks. Starting in a protected swallow bay with easy water access, you’ll go through some predive checks, get familiar with the equipment, and practice some basic skills at standing depth.
Once you feel comfortable, it’s time for your first dive! With the instructor, you’ll dive beneath the surface to a maximum depth of 5 metres (16 feet). The waters are clear and offer great visibility of the seabed. The marine life in Vouliagmeni is diverse and abundant, typical of the Mediterranean Sea ecosystem. You may encounter colourful fish, loggerhead sea turtles, lobsters, moray eels, corals and sponges. At the end of the dive, you’ll return to the shore and debrief the experience. Back at the dive centre in Athens, you'll receive your first dive certificate to keep as a momento of your experience.
