South of Tarascon-sur-Ariège, the Vicdessos cave is known not only for its small underground river but also for its accessibility from the age of 12, for anyone wishing to discover caving in Ariège. The cave is located beneath the Rocher d'Olbier mountain and offers different routes so you can decide whether or not you want to try your hand at a few rope techniques during your experience, of course alongside a state-qualified instructor who will look after your safety while guiding you step by step.

For around 2.5 hours underground, your introduction to caving in the Vicdessos cave will take you to the heart of a canyon where a small river winds its way through black marble veined with white quartz, providing a magnificent backdrop. Small waterfalls, beautiful galleries and a natural slide at the end of the route will give you and your family and friends an unforgettable caving experience in Val-de-Sos!

Practical information

A 3-hour caving trip in the Vicdessos cave, on a route of your choice (with or without the use of ropes) to discover the underground river that hides there.

Course of events

- Meeting with the instructor in Val-de-Sos town hall square

- Briefing on the activity and safety instructions

- 15-minutes approach walk to the cave

- Distribution of equipment and gear-up

- Departure for around 2.5 hours of caving in the Vicdessos cave, on a route with or without the use of ropes, as you wish

- Return to the meeting point at around noon (5.30 p.m. if afternoon outing), de-equipment and end of the activity

Activity requirements

Written parental authorisation is required for minors to participate in this activity without an accompanying adult.

Special terms

This activity is not accessible to pregnant people.

Claustrophobia poses no problem when taking part in this activity (you can always turn around if you need to).

Une expérience inoubliable ! Nous avons passé deux heures fantastiques à la découverte du monde souterrain, c’était absolument magique. On ne soupçonne pas la beauté des cavités et parois rocheuses creusées par l’eau sous nos pieds, depuis des millions d’années… balade tout à fait accessible pour des novices que nous étions….

Sortie spéléo des eaux chaudes. On a appris énormément, ça a été une découverte que nous n'oublierons pas entre les explications complètes mais adaptées, l'excursion, l'apprentissage des différentes techniques et la mise en pratique.
