Rupert Hirner born in 1961 in Eisenerz, an iron mining city in Austria, had his first taste of bungee jumping in Nanaimo, Canada, when he jumped from a 42 metre bridge. This breath-taking experience launched his lifelong ambition of finding bungees higher and more audacious.
Coming back from Canada he made the firm decision to bungee jump from Präbichlbrücke Bridge, which stands at a height of 110 metres in his hometown of Eisenerz. In 1992, he was feeling more bold, which is why he did the first 100 metre jump in Austria from a hot-air balloon.
In 1993, he made the active choice to share this thrill seeking activity with others and organised a range of jumps over 100 metres. On 3rd October of the same year, Rupert jumped from the Europabrücke for the first time. On the 3rd October of the following year, Rupert added the world’s highest jump off a tower to his long list of achievements. He jumped from the 253 metre Berlin TV-Tower in front of over 100,000 viewers.
In 1995, Rupert did one of the most spectacular bungee stunts ever; prior to the final round of the Four Hills Tournament, he jumped from a 65 metre crane that was positioned over the counter slope of the Jumping Hill. Wearing skis, he held himself using the bungee cord, eventually he let go of the cord to land and then skied down the slope – what a spectacular finish!
In 2002 in Vienna, Rupert jumped 420 metres from an army helicopter, this was a late 10 year anniversary of his first Jump: it was 10 times 42 metres, which commemorated his first 42 metre jump in Nanaimo.
Today Rupert is the Managing Director of Rupert Hirner Bungy Jumping. The company organizes bungee jumps from the Europabrücke, Cologne Breinsperre, Schlegeissperre, in Mondsee and from mobile bungee bouncing ramps.
