Soufrière: The Must-Do Activities

Soufrière: What to do when you get there?

Discover the activities to do in La Soufrière! The highest peak in the Lesser Antilles, the Grande Soufrière volcano offers an incredible environment to discover in Guadeloupe!

Located in the heart of the Guadeloupe National Park in Basse-Terre, La Soufrière volcano reaches an altitude of 1,467 m. Nicknamed "the old lady", it is a must-see if you are staying on the island of Guadeloupe! Its rich environment will allow you to discover the tropical fauna and flora of Basse-Terre through unforgettable hikes. You will be able to admire the famous Carbet Falls, the highest of which is 110 m high, the Grande chute du Galion, as well as the Saut d'eau de Matouba. The southern flank of the Soufrière volcano also has a crater lake, Lake Flammarion, a special site not to be missed!

The Soufrière volcano region is the only place in Guadeloupe where it is possible to practice canyoning. From Saint-Claude at the foot of the volcano, you can for example go to the Ravine Chaude canyon or the Vauchelet canyon! And if you prefer to relax, the commune of Basse-Terre offers you some nice swimming sessions on the black sand beach of Rivière-Sens, as well as some cultural visits. For example, you can visit Fort Delgrès to get an insight into the history of Guadeloupe, or visit the Bologna distillery if you'd rather taste the local rum.

The Grande Soufrière volcano in the Guadeloupe National Park and its nature will enchant you, in a tropical atmosphere inviting to adventure!

I was curious about the level. It is heavy for someone who doesn’t do much in sports, but you will manage.

Friendly instructors, beautiful location and nice mix of activity during the four hours we were taking part. A really fun experience that I’d recommend to families with children aged 8+

The hike was fantastic, and it took us 3h30min only, even though we didn't rush, probably because we were only 3 people plus the guide, and the 5 hour estimate is based on groups of up to 12 people.

The volcano is very beautiful with a jagged top. The hike was exhilarating and the views into the smoking sulphorous pits of the volcano were only rivaled by the fantastic views of the whole island!
