Caving in the Port de l'Hers abyss in Ariège

The Gouffre Georges is located near Auzat in the bowels of Mont Béas in the heart of the Parc Naturel Régional des Pyrénées Ariégeoises. The underground network extends over a total length of more than 4 km and a depth of 721 m.

This chasm promises magnificent scenery between the pink marbled limestone rocks and the lherzolite. The latter is actually a rock from the earth's mantle that is extremely rare to observe (and which owes its name to the nearby L'Hers pond).

This particularity has earned the chasm a worldwide reputation. In 2018, an international team of researchers descended there to study the formation of the Pyrenean mountains and, more generally, the movements of the continents.

First of all, you will go through some very beautiful and large galleries. You will also have to descend several shafts with the appropriate caving techniques. Finally, you will arrive at the underground river. The objective is a siphon located at a depth of 400 m. Once you have reached this point, all you have to do is go back up. The picnic (brought by you) halfway through the route will be in the chasm itself.

The return to the exit of the chasm is planned for around 8pm. You will remove your equipment and can go and change.
