On the northern bank of the Torne River, just a stone’s throw from Kiruna, lies the ICEHOTEL, a stunning hotel made entirely of ice in Jukkasjärvi. Since 1989, this unique site has taken shape each winter as the river’s water freezes, allowing the creation of a temporary structure that will naturally melt away when spring arrives. Every year, different artists work to give the ICEHOTEL its exceptional architecture, which changes annually, along with its sculptures that add to its unique charm. It would be a shame not to experience it and be dazzled by such beauty! That's why the team at Lights Over Lapland offers you the chance to visit this ice hotel in Jukkasjärvi from Abisko or Björkliden, with a transfer on a heated bus for the 1.5-hour journey between the ICEHOTEL and your own hotel.
You will have about 3 hours in total to explore the site at your own pace and according to your interests. From the various rooms, each featuring its own unique sculptures, to the Ice Bar where you can enjoy a drink (at your own expense), and even the ice church, you will have plenty of time to discover every corner of this one-of-a-kind hotel. Prepare to be amazed by all the intricate details that make the place a true work of art! You will also have the option to have lunch during your free time, either a picnic you have brought with you or a meal at the restaurant opposite the ICEHOTEL (buffet-style, approximately 200 SEK per person).
Between art and nature, Jukkasjärvi’s ice hotel is a fascinating place to discover near Kiruna. With its interior at around -5°C, magnificent ice sculptures, and its seasonal existence, there is no doubt it is one of the must-visit sites in Swedish Lapland!
