Join this Northern Lights reindeer sledding excursion from Tromsø and experience the unique culture of the Arctic North! Discover Sámi traditions, savour a traditional meal, feed a herd of 200 reindeer, and enjoy the chance to witness the magical Northern Lights. Suitable for all ages, this activity is offered by Tromsø Lapland, a company established in 2009 by authentic Saami people with long reindeer herding traditions and the longest experience of running authentic Saami experience and culture tours in Tromsø.
The Sámi people are the indigenous inhabitants of Sápmi, which stretches across the northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and the Kola Peninsula in Russia. Sámi culture is characterized by its rich traditions, language, and close connection to the Arctic environment. In addition, reindeer herding is a traditional Sámi livelihood and a symbol of their culture.
Your journey begins in Tromsø, where you and your group will be picked up at the meeting point. After a scenic 45-minute drive, you will arrive at the Tromsø Lapland base and be greeted by your friendly and experienced guide. Once you've put on your winter gear, including thermal overalls and winter boots, you'll experience the magic of a reindeer sledding under the starry Arctic sky with the Lyngen Alps as a backdrop. If luck is on your side, you may witness the vibrant colours of the Northern Lights as well.
After the reindeer sledding near Tromsø, you'll feed the herd and have time to interact with these amazing creatures. With the reindeer fed, you'll be taken to a Lavvo-hut (a Sámi tent) and enjoy a warm stew with hot drinks. While you're savouring your delicious meal, your guide will share insights into Sámi culture and history, including aspects of daily life, artefacts, and traditional Sámi clothing. Then, it's time to bid farewell to your reindeer friends and depart for Tromsø with memories that will last a lifetime!
