Get off the beaten track and visit the superb Katla ice cave on a super jeep excursion from Reykjavík!
With its surprising shades of blue and black, the Katla ice cave, one of Iceland's largest and most active volcanoes, is a natural curiosity not to be missed near Vík í Mýrdal. Located on the edge of the volcano and the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap, it is accessible by super jeep, in the heart of a landscape that will make your drive an excursion in itself!
Comfortably seated in the vehicle, you will drive from Reykjavík to the Kötlujökull glacier, the south-eastern part of Mýrdalsjökull, and spend around 40 minutes exploring the superb Katla ice cave with a qualified guide. Once the tour is over, the guide will take you around the cave to see if it is possible to visit another one, as a few small cavities may form from time to time. Finally, you will get back to the super jeep to head back to Reykjavík, taking time along the way to visit 2 of South Iceland's incredible waterfalls: Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss.
A natural wonder that would be a shame not to admire, the Katla ice cave deserves your full attention if you are planning a day caving trip from Reykjavík. And don't forget that you can even take a tour of the Katla cave from Vík í Mýrdal if you are staying nearby!
