Experience some of Iceland's most magnificent views on this full-day sightseeing boat tour on Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon from Reykjavík!
The sightseeing boat tour on Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon departs from Reykjavík, Iceland's capital and largest city situated on the southwestern coast. Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon is located nearby at the base of the Vatnajökull Glacier, the largest ice cap in Europe.
The boat trip on Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon begins at the starting point in Reykjavík. You'll board the comfortable bus and enjoy a scenic drive to the Lava Centre in Hvolsvöllur, a small town located approximately 1.5 hours from Reykjavík. The Lava Centre is dedicated to Iceland's famous volcanic activity. Here, you'll stop to grab some snacks and use the facilities before continuing the sightseeing tour to Vík í Mýrdal, a charming village surrounded by stunning cliffs. You'll stop at Freysnes Restaurant for a delicious lunch (not included in the tour price).
Then, you'll arrive at the starting point for your exhilarating boat tour on Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon! On the boat, you'll start sailing across the icy waters of the lagoon, a magnificent natural phenomenon resulting from the Breiðarmerkurjökull Glacier slowly retreating. As you sail along the peaceful landscapes, you'll have a front-row seat to some breathtaking scenery, including Hvannadalshnjúkur, Iceland's tallest mountain, and the sprawling black sand desert located between the lagoon and Skaftafell National Park.
The boat will weave in between enormous and ancient 1000-1500-year-old icebergs breaking off from the expansive Vatnajökull Glacier. The Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon covers 18 square kilometres (7 square miles) and reaches more than 248 metres (814 feet) at its deepest point. The lagoon was used as a set in some iconic blockbuster movies such as Batman Begins, Tomb Raider and two James Bond movies. During the sightseeing tour, you will also visit Diamond Beach. This black sand beach gets its name from the large, glittering ice chunks that break off from the Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier and wash ashore, resembling sparkling diamonds.
After exploring Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon, you'll stop in Vík í Mýrdal again for dinner (not included in the tour price). Then, you'll travel by bus to the impressive Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls. Skógafoss is the starting point of the famous Fimmvörðuháls walk over to Þórsmörk, and was also used in the films Thor: The Dark World and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Seljalandsfoss Waterfall is part of the Seljandsá River and is one of the most famous waterfalls in the area, as you can walk behind it. Experience the incredible sensation of being behind the waterfall while feeling the spray of water on your face!
Throughout the tour, depending on the weather, you may also witness the volcanoes Hekla, Eyjafjallajökull, Westman Islands, Katla and Öræfajökull, other waterfalls such as Systrafoss and Foss á Síðu, mossy lava fields, and the glaciers Langjökull, Mýrdalsjökull, Vatnajökull and several glacier snouts. The experienced guide will teach you about Iceland's unique history and geology. At the end of the full-day excursion, you'll return to the original starting point in Reykjavík.
