Explore one of the world's only accessible active underwater volcanoes on this adventure dive in Santorini! Welcoming certified divers only.
Santorini is a stunning Greek island located in the southern Aegean Sea, part of the Cyclades group of islands. The island was shaped by a massive volcanic eruption, which created its unique crescent shape and dramatic cliffs. Renowned for its active underwater volcano, Santorini has an array of popular dive sites centred around Nea Kameni, including Adiavatous Reef, Lion Face, and M.P.A Reef.
This activity takes place from the dive centre on Caldera Beach. This area is steeped in local myth and legend, home to an active volcano across the caldera reef and unique cave systems, with technicolour macro life, amazing swim-throughs and hot springs! To begin, you'll meet the certified instructor at the centre (transfer is included from your accommodation in Santorini, please specify when booking). You must have at least an Open Water Diver certification to participate in this dive.
Choose from a one-dive or two-dive package. You'll start with a safety and itinerary briefing. Then, you'll prepare the scuba diving equipment (mask, snorkel, fins, regulator, buoyancy control device and tank). Groups are organised on a 4:1 ratio – ensuring supervision and guidance to a maximum depth of 30m (90ft). Once thought to be the location of the lost city of Atlantis, this spectacular site includes a reef, wreck, caves, and caldera rim – making it a bucket list location, not only for its stunning volcanic rock formations but also its wealth of marine life. Still under scientific investigation by marine scientists, you’ll find beautiful corals and sponges acting as a backdrop for an abundance of fish – all congregating around geothermal vents in the bedrock.
Depending on the conditions, you'll visit one (or two) of the sites around the volcano. The Hot Springs Shallow Wreck is home to a World War II shipwreck. This dive is combined with an interesting reef. You'll dive to a maximum depth of 13m (43ft). The Volcano dive site offers an incredible experience to explore around the volcano. This site has a maximum depth of 25m (82ft), with enormous boulders, colourful sponges and a plateau bursting with life.
The Adiavatous Reef is located inside the rim of the caldera, near the volcano, Adiavatous is one of the most beautiful reefs in Santorini. Home to a wealth of crustaceans and invertebrates, as well as plenty of fish including wrasse, anthias, groupers, and barracuda, this site is a favourite with local divers. Here, you'll dive to a maximum depth of 30m (98ft). After exploring the dive site, you'll return to the centre at Caldera Beach and debrief the experience.
