Rethymno is a charming town located on the northern coast of the island of Crete in Greece. It is the third-largest town on the island and is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture, Venetian influences, and vibrant atmosphere. This off-road adventure will take you through unspoiled nature and local villages where you’ll also get to stop at a shepherd’s hut and learn about the traditional cheese-making process!
Your adventure starts from Rethymno where you will be picked up in a comfortable Jeep seating a maximum of 6 passengers by the experienced guide. You’ll head southeast passing through the traditional villages of Milopotamos in order to reach the historic Halepa Monastery. This monastery was once a refuge for Cretan rebels during civil wars and is a great spot for photos since you will get to take in incredible views of the valley and the highest mountaintops of Crete!
After, your off-road route continues to a traditional shepherd’s hut where you’ll have panoramic views of your picturesque surroundings! You may even get to see eagles and wild goats if you’re lucky. At the hut, you will get to learn about the lifestyle of a shepherd and discover the traditional cheese-making process where you’ll also get to try fresh Cretan cheese and a shot of raki, the national drink of Crete.
Upon leaving the hut, you will make your way to a traditional Cretan tavern in the village of Axos where you will get to relax and enjoy local dishes and wine and experience the meaning of Cretan hospitality at its finest! You can also take a coffee after lunch before making your way back on an easy asphalt road to your accommodation in Rethymno.
