Take a 7 km hike to Tajogaite volcano, the new volcano of Cumbre Vieja that erupted in 2021 on the island of La Palma!
The eruption of Cumbre Vieja on 19 September 2021 gave rise to Tojogaite, a new volcano on the island of La Palma that can be explored on foot with a professional guide. A trail has been set up from the Mirador Astronómico del Llano del Jable, at an altitude of 1,200 metres, so you can get close to the crater and take full advantage of the unique environment created by the 2021 eruption. A total of 7 km of walking awaits you on a circular route with 370 metres of ascent, a moderately difficult route requiring good physical condition. Your hike to the Tajogaite volcano will therefore take around 3.5 hours, with breaks along the way!
You will reach the Cumbre Vieja Natural Park by taxi from El Paso, accompanied by your guide who will ensure your safety throughout the hike to the Tajogaite volcano. The trail begins by approaching the cone of the Tajogaite volcano, where there are still pine trees, and then passes through an area once cultivated with fig, mulberry and chestnut trees. As you get closer and closer to the crater, you will be able to see the impact the eruption has had on its surroundings, with dead trees, fumaroles, and lava flows. There will be plenty of time for your guide to explain in more detail the history of the volcano, its geology and many other fascinating aspects of the world of volcanoes on the island of La Palma!

Practical information
A guided hike to the new volcano Tajogaite at la Cumbre Vieja: you will set off on a 3.5-hour hike over 7 km, with an ascent of around 370 metres.
Please note that this is an average level walk with sandy ground, which can increase in difficulty during high summer temperatures.
Please allow around 4 hours for the whole experience.
- Meeting with the guide in front of the El Paso tourist office 10 minutes before the start of the activity
- Taxi transfer to the start of the hike at the Mirador Astronómico del Llano del Jable (approx. 15-minute drive)
- Briefing on the course of the activity
- Departure for a 3.5-hour hike to the Tajogaite volcano: a 7 km circular route with an ascent of 370 metres, during which you will enjoy a few breaks during which the guide will provide you with information about the site and its environment
- Return to the starting point of the hike and transfer by taxi to El Paso (about 15-minute drive) where you will end the activity
Being in good physical condition is required to take part in this activity as the route is not suitable for people who are not used to walking.
All minors must be accompanied by an adult.

A minimum number of 4 participants is required to run this activity.
This activity is not accessible to people with reduced mobility and is not recommended for people who are pregnant, elderly and/or have hip and/or knee problems.
