Discover a unique underground world with this caving adventure in the Cueva de Las Palomas lava tube on the island of La Palma!
Although greener than the other Canary Islands, La Palma is home to several volcanoes that have played a part in shaping the island's landscape, not only on the surface but also underground, where lava tunnels have been formed. The Cueva de Las Palomas was formed by the eruption of the San Juan volcano in July 1949 and is one of the youngest lava tubes in La Palma to be visited, with a professional guide on hand to tell you all you need to know about this incredible place. To make the most of it, head over to the Caños de Fuego interpretation centre in Las Manchas to discover caving in the Cueva de Las Palomas lava tunnel!
You will meet your guide for this caving excursion in the Cueva de Las Palomas lava tube at the entrance to the footbridge leading to it, which overlooks an impressive lava field. You will begin by crossing the footbridge (around 250 metres), taking in the surrounding volcanic landscape, including the Cumbre Vieja mountain range and its most recent volcano, Tajogaite, which erupted in 2021. The guide will explain the crossing and then the entrance to the Cueva de Las Palomas lava tunnel. You will spend around 1 hour underground by the light of your headlamps, in the heart of a setting of solidified lava where the environment changes completely. You will discover different solidified lava formations as your guide describes them to you and shares a wealth of fascinating information about this superb lava tube in La Palma.
Cool and silent, the interior of the Cueva de Las Palomas lava tunnel offers a pleasant experience for discovering La Palma's underground world in a small group of no more than 14 participants.
