Practical information
- Welcome at the Mokarran Diving centre in Taravao
- Wetsuit fitting at the centre (for those wishing to take part in the launch if this is possible during the outing)
- Boarding the boat
- Briefing on the activity and safety instructions
- Departure for 3.5 hours at sea
- During the whale-hunting phase, the instructor will provide you with key information about these cetaceans, their way of life, their behaviour, etc., and will pass on educational tools: whale models, photos, skin samples (squames) which will later be used for DNA analysis, extracts of recorded songs, etc.
- Once the whales have been found, there is an observation phase during which the instructor will explain their active behaviour on the surface (jumping, caudal strike, pectoral strike, etc.), their interactions (inspection, approaching, releasing bubbles, periscope, etc.), their swimming, educating and resting behaviour, etc., while the team studies their behaviour
- Sea conditions and whale behaviour permitting, launch possible for those who wish to do so: the instructor will enter the water first to ensure that there is no danger, then participants wishing to do so will follow
- Return to the boat, then back to the centre if there is no more time to look for other whales
- De-equipping at the centre and end of the activity
You need to be able to swim and be comfortable using fins, mask and snorkel in the open sea if you want to take part in the launch possible during the activity.
All children must be accompanied by an adult.
A minimum number of 4 participants is required to run this activity.
This activity is not accessible to pregnant people.
Since whales are unpredictable, their presence is never guaranteed.
Supervisors have the right to restrict certain people to the water, depending on their age, physical condition and the sea state.
