Beginner's program
- A short history of surfing, introduction to ocean tides, currents and waves
- Introduction to surf equipment
- Take off (standing up on your board) practice on the sand
- Basic techniques on the white water (first waves)
- How to go to the line-up and handle with the white water
- How to position yourself on the board, how to paddle, sit and turn
- Take off practice on the white water
- Turning on the white water
- First approach on surfing unbroken waves
- The local region geography - how to find the best spots
Intermediate program
- First session has an evaluation of your surfing skill and establish the best way to improve
- Approach to advanced surfing techniques
- How to choose the best surf equipment according to your level
- Take-off on unbroken waves and turning
- Practicing paddling into the wave
- Front-side and back-side surfing, learn how to go right and left on a wave
- Maneuvers: trimming (how to get speed)
- Priority rules
- Shape, size, and direction of the wave
- Understand the correct position in the line-up to surf unbroken waves
Advanced program
To join Quinta d’Anta Surf School’s advanced surfing lessons, you need to feel comfortable on the water, know the priority rules, be able to catch unbroken waves on your own, and turn.
- Ability to catch and ride unbroken waves
- Choose the best schedules and surf spots in order to practice advanced techniques with less crowd on the water
- Ocean knowledge
- Practice the classic surfing line: trimming, bottom turn, top turn
Surf equipment knowledge
- Incorporate and practice advanced maneuvers: tube ridding, cut back, off the lip and floater
Arrival by airplane
Airport transfer is not included but it's really easy to get to Quinta d'Anta Hotel. The closest airport is in Oporto, but if you plan to come by train it takes about the same time from Lisbon because the train station is closer and easier to get.

Whether you land in Oporto or Lisbon, you can reach Portugal On Water Surf Lodge (at Quinta d’Anta Hotel) by metro and train, metro and bus or car. When opting for public transportation, you should head to Coimbra (or Alfarelos Station if you take the train) and then Portugal On Water provides a pick-up time.
By train: either from Oporto or Lisbon choose as destination “Alfarelos Station" (https://www.cp.pt/passageiros/pt), at the arrival train station they will pick you up for free (make sure to announce your schedule). Costs: from Oporto starts at €13,20, from Lisbon starts at €17,20.
Direct transfer: right from the airport to the hotel lobby. Ask for more details in the inquiry (https://hotelquintadantaeportugalonwater.airportshuttle.pt/). Costs: from Oporto starts at €57 from Lisbon starts at €52.
Rent a Car: good option if you want to drive around and be more independent. The hotel offers free parking. For more than 1 person maybe it's the best deal.
