The Vorderrhein aka the Swiss Grand Canyon is a 20-kilometre river section between Ilanz and Reichenau. A grade two river with exciting whitewater rapids as well as an extraordinarily beautiful landscape with vertical cliffs, deep chasms and steep scree slopes, this section of the Rhine is located predominantly in the canton of Graubünden.
Operating as a half day (4 hours - 20km) or full day (6 hours - 20km) rafting excursion on the Vorderrhein are a great way to explore the area with your loved ones. You will start your whitewater experience in Ilanz where you will meet your instructor at the train station and receive a short safety briefing along with a few basic paddling techniques. The rafting trip in Ilanz will lead you through the impressive Rhine Gorge renowned for its steep chalk walls and high rock towers looming on both sides of the river. Rafting groups will also have the chance to navigate small grade two rapids that are suitable for adventurous beginners (BBQ lunch organised for full day guests). The trip ends in Reichenau, just above the confluence of the Vorder- and the Hinterrhein. Your dry clothes and a complimentary drink will be waiting for you at the end of the excursion.
