Beginner Kayaking Course in Bohuslän

Join a beginner kayaking course to learn all of the basic paddling skills in a scenic location along coastal Bohuslän. Welcoming adventurers from ages 15 and up!

Bohuslän is a beautiful region situated along Sweden’s west coast. The area is home to a stunning archipelago, one of Sweden's most iconic coastal areas. The archipelago is characterised by quaint fishing villages, charming islands, and rugged landscapes. This is a popular destination for water activities, such as kayaking!

This beginner kayaking course is open to everyone, the perfect start to learn all of the basics of paddling. To begin, you’ll meet the experienced guide at the starting point in Uddevalla, a small western town located in the Bohuslän region. The guide will provide all of the kayaking equipment (kayak, paddle, cockpit cover and life jacket). You must bring suitable clothing (quick drying synthetic or woollen shirt, bathing trunks, wind jacket) and shoes (water resistant sandals, neoprene shoes or Crocs) for paddling.

The course begins with theory, where you’ll learn about sea kayaking equipment and its use. The guide will also go through important safety instructions. Then, you’ll head out into the fjord and learn the practice of paddling in the calm waters. You will learn techniques for entry and exit, forward and backward paddling, and stopping and turning in different ways. Once you have mastered the basics, you will move on to skills such as how to use the rudder and skeg and how to plan and implement your kayaking trips in relation to your own experience and expertise. The course corresponds with BCU 2 Star Sea and EPP yellow level. After your course, and some paddling on your own, you can choose to do an assessment within any of the systems, get proof that you have the skills required for that particular level and then move on to the next step. At the end of the full-day excursion, you’ll return to the starting point in Uddevalla.
