The Piton de la Fournaise, an emblematic site of Reunion Island, rises to 2,632 meters and dominates the southern plains of the island. Built on the south-eastern flank of the Piton des Neiges, it is a volcano known for its frequent eruptions. The aim of this 5 to 6 hours hike is to reach the summit of the Piton de la Fournaise, and to do so by venturing off the beaten track!
Throughout this hike to the Piton de la Fournaise, you will discover a lunar landscape with an end-of-the-world feel that is incredibly powerful and worth the diversions. Once you reach the top of the volcano, you will be able to admire the Dolomieu crater, one of the two volcanic craters located at the top of the Piton de la Fournaise with the Bory crater. It collapsed during the April 2007 eruption and is 1 kilometre long, 750 meters wide and about 350 meters deep.
The hike to the volcano will be punctuated by the comments of your state-qualified mountain guide who will help you learn more about the specificities of this captivating place.

Practical information
- Meeting with the guide in front of the Volcano Museum in Bourg-Murat
- Departure by car (your vehicle) in the direction of the volcano with a few stops along the way to obtain information on certain types of landscape
- Once you arrive at the Pas de Bellecombe, the discovery continues on foot: the lava flows will follow the lava flows in gratons, you will discover the Piton de la Fournaise with the explanations of your guide
- After a long ascent, you will reach the summit of the Piton de la Fournaise from where you can admire the Dolomieu crater and where you will have a picnic
- In the afternoon, you will go back down the slopes of the volcano to reach your starting point
