Experience something different and explore the authentic side of Portugal with this hiking tour around Serra de Freita in the Arouca Geopark!
Serra de Freita is part of the Geological Park within an hour's drive of Porto City. It belongs to the Unesco Global Geoparks Network, which really makes it a must-see place for nature lovers in Portugal.
The park is known for its unique geological phenomena such as the Pedras Parideiras (birthing stones), a place where stones seem to be "born" from other rocks; the Arouca Geosites, where you can see fossils that are over 500 million years old; the amazing Wooden Walk Bridge, which stretches over 8km and goes along the banks of the beautiful Paiva River, and the 75 meter-high Frecha da Mizarela waterfall a wonder that stands as one of the highest in Portugal. Additionally, the Serra de Freita covers the highlands of the park. It’s a beautiful place where nature prevails.
This hiking tour through Serra de Freita will start at the base of the Frecha da Mizarela waterfall, and then move to higher ground. You will also visit some old villages where time seems to have stopped a century ago. It is a beautiful area where you can see a lot of interesting things like cattle roaming freely, and returning home by themselves at the end of the day. You can also encounter shepherds directing their sheep and goats to the best pastures.
The hiking tour through the Serra de Freita is an immersive walk into nature that will lightly challenge your body and fill your mind with the beautiful green hills and crystal clear waters of the bodies of water that stand there. It is an adventure not to be missed!
