Located in the North Atlantic Ocean, the country and island of Iceland is celebrated for its distinctive geological phenomenon, including volcanos, waterfalls, glaciers, and geothermal hot springs. Nature lovers from across the globe travel to Iceland for its rugged landscapes, dynamic culture, and awe-inspiring glaciers that cover approximately 11% of the country's topography. A guided excursion, ice-caving at the Vatnajökull Glacier near the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, is a marvellous way to discover Iceland's wonders!
The adventure begins at the meeting point near the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where you and your small group will be greeted by a certified glacier guide. After an initial safety and itinerary briefing, you'll board the 4x4 vehicle and embark upon the 30-minute scenic transfer to the departure point at the Vatnajökull Glacier. En route, the guide will share fun facts about Iceland's glaciers and distinctive topography.
Once you've arrived, you'll receive a helmet, harness, headlamp, and crampons. With your gear on you'll begin the 30-minute hike to the edge of the Vatnajökull Glacier, which is customized to the pace of the group. Don't forget your camera to capture Iceland's otherwordly and dramatic landscapes! At the mouth of the 'Saphire Ice Cave' (also known as the 'Crystal Ice Cave'), you'll receive another safety briefing and introduction to ice-caving. In addition, your guide will help with the crampons if necessary.
With your headlamp on, you'll enter the Vatnajökull Glacier ice cave and step into another world with varying hues of colour and textures of ice. During the extraordinary 45-minute ice cave visit, the guide will share how it was formed and how the shape, size, and colours vary from year to year. As you go deeper into the cave and explore its multiple chambers, the guide will take personalized photos and you and your loved ones to capture the special moment (please see 'special terms'). Hiking back to the vehicle, you'll return to the meeting point with a lasting impression of Iceland and this astounding excursion, ice-caving at the Vatnajökull Glacier near the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon!
