Sunwapta, in the language of the Stoney Indians, means ‘turbulent river’, and the Sunwapta River definitely lives up to its name! Throughout the 13 km stretch of river that you will be rafting down in Jasper, there is a consistent flow of Class 2 rapids among multiple sections of Class 3 rapids – meaning non-stop fun and thrill! The Sunwapta River is typically a low volume, technical river, but for even bigger waves and faster currents, aim to go rafting in Jasper during the high-water season from mid-June to late-July!
This whitewater rafting tour of the Sunwapta River begins in downtown Jasper where you will meet your guides and be driven to the raft launch site. Once there, you will be equipped with everything you need for rafting, including lifejackets, paddles, helmets, and even a wetsuit and booties if necessary. The best part is that you don’t need any previous rafting experience to tackle these rapids – your expert, licensed guide will deftly maneuver the raft and make sure you are well briefed before and during the activity so that you can focus on having fun rafting in Jasper National Park!
